Persistent Black Dots
Please allow me to tell you a little about my personal journey.
My face has been plagued with tiny black dots since childhood, mostly along my nose, cheeks, and chin. The black dots are not bumpy; my skin is quite smooth. They are only about the size of a pin head. From a distance, they can’t be seen. But, anyone who is within a few feet of me can clearly see them.
Let’s face it. We come into contact with people on a daily basis. And the black dots were always there; always present to show themselves to whoever I met.
No one, not even doctors, were able to help get rid of them. No products or routines were successful either.
As a teenager, I tried a lot of treatments that promised to give clear skin. And believe me when I say I attempted everything: regular bar soap, facial scrubs, an electric facial deep cleansing brush, several prescription creams. Even brand names like Neutrogena, Nivea, Cera Ve, Clean & Clear, and Biore pore clearing strips. You name it, I tried it.
Then there was the day when a peer told me that if he had a face like mine, he would never show it in public. He went on to say that he would scrub it with straight alcohol until it was clear.
With a combination of hurt feelings and being young, I got alcohol and cotton balls and went to work “clearing” my face. I wiped it and wiped it. At least a dozen times. And tried for days on end. This did absolutely nothing to my skin.
Usually when alcohol is overused, the skin becomes dry, flaky, and irritated. Mine just looked normal. Worst yet, the black dots were still there.
In my adolescent years, I was fortunate to never get full blown acne. Yes, I got the occasional pimple, but nothing that didn’t go away in a day and not more than one or two at a time.
And still nothing worked to clear the black dots. I had basically given up the hope of having clear skin.
Pure, Clean, Fresh
Then in my twenties, I was fortunate enough to go on a scientific research expedition to the North Pole. It took a few days on reach the ice floe at 87 degrees north latitude that would be the anchor for our home over the next five weeks. Once moored, the ship used water directly from the northern most part of the Arctic Ocean for all of our daily needs. The unspoiled water was our drinking, cooking, and bathing water.
After a couple days of washing my face with the most pristine water on Earth and cleansing with regular bar soap, I looked in the mirror. Low and behold, there were no more black dots! They had vanished. Completely. Without a trace. My face was completely free of them for the first time in my life!
I was ecstatic to say the least. To look in the mirror and not see those dots meant so much to me. Almost immediately, I realized it was the absence of pollutants, both in the atmosphere and in the water, that had allowed my skin to clear. Fresh, pure ice melt. Untouched by human pollutants.
I thought those black dots were gone for good. As long as I kept up a good cleansing routine, I was set. And all thanks to the pure waters of the Arctic Ocean.
However, my bliss was short lived. Within a couple days after my arrival back home, the black dots reappeared. I was so happy to finally have a clear face for over a month. It had reignited my desire to find a product that would work for me while living in a pollutant saturated [human-touched] environment once again.
I continued the trial and error process, but to no avail. This time I tried a few other treatments that I hadn’t tried in my youth: Aveeno, Burt’s Bees, Olay, St. Ives, Pro Active, Bath & Body Works. I decided to try varying kinds of store bought and homemade facial peels. I even tried using organic, whole foods and oils directly on my skin. They all made my skin feel great, but not one of them cleared the black dots.
To this day, I am still in opposition against them.
